Witty Comics
(Chicago Nite Life News, 1945)
™ and © Chicago Nite Life News
As the golden age of comics began to wind down in the mid-1940s, lots of publishers tried their hand at grabbing a share of the shrinking market. Witty Comics is an also-ran so obscure that it barely registers on the radar, but not because it was necessarily any worse than any other offering on the stands. Witty Comics featured a typical golden age lineup lead by a costumed hero (the completely undistinguished Pioneer), backed up by an assortment of adventurers (Dick Royce, jungle aviator). Also included are detectives (Steve Hagen, private eye), teen humor (Sir Gallagher, goofy teen inventor), non-fiction featurettes (“Live and Learn”) and gag strips (the oddly-named “Poopsicles” and “Weeny and Pop”). However, by 1945, the formula that had made outfits like DC, Quality and Fawcett successful was passé with readers looking for newer thrills (like the insurgent crime, “good girl” and romance comics then appearing on the stands) and Witty did not last into 1946.
