Jungle Jim (Charlton)

Jungle Jim was one of the most famous jungle heroes in comics, following in the footsteps of such luminaries as Tarzan and Congo Bill. With his companion Kolu, Jim acts as the jungle’s protector. Often this means stopping poachers and those who would shamelessly trample native cultures in search of personal gain. In one story, Jim is called on to stop a crass black marketeer who brings a cargo of strawberry shortcake, televisions, and guns. All of this has a magical effect as it entrances the natives so that the black marketeer can get at his real goal: stealing “smooth stones” (diamonds) from a burial site.

Along with the Jungle Jim stories, issues of this title also included features on African wildlife, and a rather interesting series of instructional text pieces that taught readers to speak Swahili (Kiswahili).
