War of the Gods

The war begins when fabled witch Circe manages to pit the Greek gods of legend (Zeus, Hermes, Hades…) against their Roman counterparts (Jupiter, Mercury, Pluto…). Previously unknown to each other, they naturally see their own dopplegangers as impostors who must be driven out of New Olympus. The battle that ensues is felt across the dimensions and soon draws in virtually the entire cast of DC characters. Notably involved were those characters who draw at least some of their own history from myth, such as Wonder Woman and Shazam.

War of the Gods was 1991’s entry in the DC mega-crossover category. It centered around the four issues of this mini-series, but carried into titles as far apart as Animal Man and L.E.G.I.O.N. In total, the story ran across some twenty-two issues.
