Master Comics was one of the cornerstones of the Fawcett lineup during the 1940s. Originally featuring a mix of adventure, western, and generic super-hero stories—and, for a while, the home of Bulletman, a popular second-string Fawcett hero—Master Comics began featuring the adventures of Captain Marvel, Jr. with issues 21-22 (crossing over into Whiz Comics #25).

Newsboy Freddie Freeman, crippled in a fight against the evil Captain Nazi, was rescued by Captain Marvel and taken to the old wizard, Shazam, who gave him the power to become the world’s mightiest boy by uttering the words “Captain Marvel.” Junior’s adventures were generally grittier than those of the other Marvels, partly due to the superb realistic artwork of Mac Raboy.

This series also introduced Nyoka the Jungle Girl, Tom Mix, and Hoppalong Cassidy.
