Begun in July of 1975, this forty-nine-issue Charlton series turned out a respectable set of war stories, ranging from Alexander the Great to Viet Nam. At its best, it rose above the roar of the guns to address the real human tragedy of war, as in “A Reason For Dying,” the story of a black slave who escapes to fight for the Union in the Civil War—only to be killed by the white man he helped raise while a slave. As that man kneels over the body of his old friend, he hears that they’ve won the battle—and realizes how hollow “victory” can be.
