In-Country Nam
(Survival Art, 1986)
™ and ©1986 Ronald F. Ledwell
The war in Viet Nam, fought in the jungles and mud, was unlike any other war America had fought before. Despite the intentions of those in charge, it became a war about individuals, not global ideals. The goal of this title is gritty realism, with the focus on small-unit combat situations. The stories are driven by details and factual information, which unfortunately lessens the air of danger and suspense that should be present. Even the personalities of the characters revolve more around their ranks or duties than the plight of the soldiers themselves. So, even though the scenarios are fairly accurate depictions of how the military forces functioned and how events unfolded, the reader is given no personal stake in the soldiers’ plight or the outcome of any particular battle.
