Atomic Age
(Epic, 1990-1991)
™ and ©1991 Frank Lovece and Mike Okamoto
This title is a curious mix of science-fiction, humor, and drama that also preaches about the evils of intolerance and social injustice. Set in the 1950s, The Atomic Age deals primarily with an alien from the planet Helix, who has come to Earth in order to stop a member of his planet’s slave race, the Drones, from freeing her species through a unique kind of mass suicide. The presence of the aliens sets in motion storylines dealing with racism, feminism, and homosexuality; subjects that seem daring because of 1950s attitudes. None of these themes are given much more than lip service however, as the story spreads itself too thin to do much other than point out the obvious.
