Ninety Candles

Xeric–winner Neil Kleid endeavored “an exercise in method and patience” when he set out to draw one panel every day for ninety days, intending each panel to signify a year in the life of Ninety Candles’ protagonist Kevin Hall. Kleid let the story to evolve improvisationally by making it up day to day. The result is this sad, sentimental tale of an introspective child who grows up to be a struggling cartoonist. Ninety Candles may be a Rorschach for those contemplating a vocation in the creative life. The book can be read as a cautionary tale, portrait of anxiety, bittersweet affirmation, or something else. Round, green–colored panels are placed two on a page with captions beneath them.
