Fans of the old Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella magazines rejoice, Doomed is here. While not printed on cheap, old newsprint, the format and look of this series is enough to make old Jim Warren threaten a lawsuit if he were still publishing. Like the aforementioned Warren magazines, Doomed has a regular host, this one in the form of a sexy female named Ms. Doomed. Story-wise, it's a mixed bag, but the series definitely has great potential, using the likes of Robert Bloch to scare your pants off.

Obligatory benchmarks for any anthology horror comic book nowadays are such classic E.C. comics as Tales from the Crypt and Haunt of Fear. This certainly has all of the same ingredients: taut stories with twist endings, superb writers, and even a Crypt Keeper–type hostess that bookends this comic’s five features.

But it also evokes the feel of another line of horror comics from long ago: the less-recalled Marvel horror mags from the mid–1970s—titles like Monsters Unleashed and Haunt of Horror. Part of the allure may simply be the black–and–white magazine format, but it’s also the well–crafted tales that are decidedly for adult audiences.

Chris Ryall and Ashley Wood’s adaptation of Richard Matheson’s brilliant “Blood Son,” about an odd and horrific boy, is eerie and very troubling but ultimately and disturbingly satisfying. Ryall and Kristian Donaldson’s take on Robert Bloch’s “The Final Performance” features a stranger in an even stranger town’s diner. The remaining features are no less delightfully creepy. Fans of horror from any era will get the creeps from this.
