Fairy Tale Parade

    (Dell, 1942-1943)
™ and © Dell Publishing Co.

Unusually for Dell Comics, Fairy Tale Parade began as a numbered series and then switched into the sporadic release dates of the Dell Four Color line; ordinarily, the company began with titles in the Four Color series and promoted its successes into regular publication. The first issue looks very much as though it comprised samples from Walt Kelly, used to get work following a stint at the Disney animation studios—with elaborately decorated panels.

Stories included traditional fairy tales and original stories, and Kelly was soon joined by other artists including Dan Noonan. In recent years, Art Spiegelman has put together hardcover children’s books inspired by this series begun about 60 years earlier.
