Adrian Tomine New York Sketches 2004

Adrian Tomine’s work always has a slightly voyeuristic quality to it, much like Edward Hopper, with whom Tomine also shares a sort of vague, quiet sadness in observing human nature, like there might be storm clouds on the horizon. Therefore, Tomine is doing what he does best when he sketches people around New York City, on the train, in restaurants and coffee shops, and takes quick notes on what they were doing, or what they might have been thinking. It is, like all his work, simply beautiful and beautifully simple. The colors are also a nice change from the usual black and white work, roaring off the page even in earth tones.
