Nightjar: Hollow Bones
(Avatar, 2004)
™ and ©2004 Alan Moore and Bryan Talbot
In this post–World War I setting, regular folk share the world with a secret society of magically–endowed humans called Birds. Thus it happens that Beatrice Waring is not merely the young English war widow immigrating to America that she appears to be. She is also Beatrice Demdyke, the last living member of a Bird line called the Nightjar. Beatrice is an ingenue, and her voyage of self–discovery brings her into contact with other people who are also not what they appear.
Alan Moore and Bryan Talbot first presented the Nightjar concept in the original Yuggoth Cultures. Avatar Press revived the concept twenty-three years later under the writing direction of Moore collaborator Antony Johnston. One–shot Nightjar: Hollow Bones resembles a comic book in physical form, but reads more like a short story with a bit of illustration on the side.
