Yu-Gi-Oh!
(Viz, 2003-2004)
™ and © 2003 Kazuki Takahashi
Graphic novel; Read right to left; b&w.
The original manga series that spawned an empire of trading card games, a hit cartoon series, and several video game installments selling worldwide.
Yu-Gi-Oh! is the story of Yugi Moto, a dweebish, underdeveloped boy who gains supernatural powers (and a dual personality) when he unlocks the power of an ancient Egyptian artifact known as the Millenium Puzzle by solving it. Imprisoned inside the Millenium Puzzle is the spirit of an ancient and powerful Egyptian pharoah who now not only shares Yugi’s body, but adds a feet to Yugi’s height when they “transform” and the pharoah takes over (he looks the same, just a foot taller, with spikier hair, and a different personality…). And with the pharoah spirit Yami’s help, Yugi is able to beat any opponent at any game. (Hence the title Yu-Gi-Oh, which in Japanese means “King of Game.”)
So naturally, Yugi is pitted against greater and more difficult enemies as the series goes on, à la Dragonball Z, each with his own agenda on how to steal Yugi’s Millenium Puzzle. Fortunately for Yugi, this pre-teen action adventures comes with a full set of clichéd supporting characters to help him along the way.
