Welcome to the first CrossGen title that’s guaranteed 100% Sigil-free! Not that the line doesn’t have its share of diversity, but the unifying theme of the Sigil of Power can become a bit overwhelming (not to mention redundant). But what’s really important about The Way of the Rat is what it is.

Bottom line: It’s a supernatural kung fu movie come to comics, for which we can thank Chuck Dixon (who’s really started to shine again, now that he’s out from under the shadow of the bat) and some stunningly beautiful art by the too-little-seen, much-talented Jeff Johnson. It’s a rollicking fantasy that gives readers their money’s work of high adventure and low comedy, along the Jackie Chan line. Likable heroes, terrible villains, beautiful women, unbelievable action: This one has all the right ingredients in their proper proportions to provide an exciting ride month after month. Now, if only Chuck could write a steampunk Western.
