David Sandlin releases a garishly colored world (to further its intended effect) in which love exists, but mostly to get betrayed by infidelity and carnal abandon. Kink and hypocrisy rule this kingdom of the damned. There are passing moments of fun and release, but they inevitably yield to the guilt and loneliness they generate. Sandlin’s narrator moons for lost love and resents the mandates of a religion whose preachers pay them no more attention than their flocks.
