Creator Myatt Murphy makes the best use of an old premise: We all have untold power that lies dormant within us but lack both the awareness and the knowledge to release it. In Two over Ten, a girl unknowingly does the bidding of a higher power by ensuring that these powers in others forever remain dormant. But her work is undone by one infant whose own hidden power allows the abilities she has taken to return to their rightful hosts.

The story is not easy to read and requires diligence to get through early on. But the effort is worth it, and, by the end of the first issue, the idea is not only clear, but riveting. Murphy delicately manages to keep the story mysterious enough to intrigue without causing undue aggravation but clarifies enough to set up the story nicely for the subsequent issue.

The art by Chris Rhoads and Jason Davis is nicely done: simple yet detailed and realistic enough to complement the story without overpowering it. The six-page “Far from Saints” backup story, written by Murphy and drawn by Scott Dalrymple, also has its share of intrigue and mystery. It will hold special interest for fans of J. Michael Straczynski’s Rising Stars.
