Liberator
(Malibu, 1987-1988)
™ and ©1987 Jim Chadwick and Butch Barnum
Like so many other comic book super-heroes, Liberator was created as the result of a government project to create an invulnerable, all-powerful super-soldier. There were two Liberators, actually. The first became a U.S. Senator when it was time to give up his super-hero role. The second, Rocky Stevens, could never get used to living without the power coursing through his bloodstream. The power also kept him from aging in the years between World War II and the current day. It’s been his whole life, so when the president ordered him to retire in 1984, it wasn’t an easy order to take. Not surprisingly, 1988 found him accompanying U.S. soldiers on a dirty little war in Grenada—having just murdered the super-hero replacement who was meant to be there instead.
Liberator was a six-issue series first published by Malibu/Eternity in late 1987.
