My Name is Mud
(Incognito, 1994)
™ and ©1994 Brian Denham
All the credits usually seen on a super-hero comic are replaced here by one name, Brain Denham. This is good for Brian, who has the chance to put his story to the public with no editorial interference, but the flipside is there’s no one else to cop the blame for stuff like transposed pages and a bizarre, text-heavy conclusion. Mud is a super-hero working for the police. Big, strong, intelligent and introspective, he’s a decent enough chap who regrets having to cancel dates when a supervillain shows up. Denham’s drawing isn’t bad and will improve once he looks beyond John Byrne, but no one’s really going to know because his coloring is so wretched. Remember those “release the rainbow” ads? That’s what Denham’s done. Every page is a conflicting radiant miasma off-putting to all but the most dedicated.
