Spider-Man: Legend of the Spider Clan

    (Marvel, 2002-2003)
™ and ©2003 Marvel Characters, Inc.

This five-issue limited series spins out of Ben Dunn’s Marvel Mangaverse, which reimagines the heroes of the Marvel Universe in anime/manga terms and reflects Japanese popular culture.

This tale by writer Kaare Andrews and artist Skottie Young recasts Peter Parker as the only surviving member of the ninja organization the Spider-Clan; all the other members were killed by a rival clan that is led by the sinister Venom. In fact, Peter’s Uncle Ben-sensei was murdered by Venom himself—an event that leads Peter, who has been trained in the martial arts all his life, to take on the mantle of Spider-Man. Fortunately, Peter has the help of the spirit of his Uncle Ben, who appears in his dreams and continues his training. As the story unfolds, Spider-Man and the Black Cat comb New York City in search of an amulet with mysterious powers, but this search brings the pair into conflict with Matt Murdock the Devil Hunter and gives Peter super-powers that corrupt his thinking.

This is a fun romp that offers an interesting twist on one of Marvel’s most enduring characters.
