“Is that a game or a comic book behind that beautiful Jerry Bingham cover painting?” Good question, and the answer is…“both!” TSR—the original makers of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, among others—designed this 1990 limited series to appeal to comics fans by featuring artwork by such greats as the aforementioned Mr. Bingham (Batman: Son of the Demon) and Paul Smith (Leave It to Chance, The Golden Age, The Uncanny X-Men). They hoped to attract gaming fans by connecting it to—and including adventures for—their Buck Rogers role-playing game. The story is a fairly perfunctory retelling of the space hero’s origin, and Paul Smith’s normally gorgeous lines are hidden behind some pretty heavy inking. It’s not a bad package, but nothing to scream about either.
