Steve Austin was an astronaut and test pilot who suffered a critical accident on reentry. His body shattered by the crash, he was rushed into emergency, experimental surgery. Both legs and an arm were replaced with bionic implants, making them several time stronger than the original limbs. In addition, one eye was replaced with a bionic camera which acts like a high-powered telephoto lens. It cost the government six million dollars to rebuild Steve, thus the name “The Six Million Dollar Man.” In his new life, Steve works as an agent in the Office of Special Investigations (O.S.I.), reporting to Oscar Goldman.

The Six Million Dollar Man was an incredibly successful TV show, launching the career of actor Lee Majors. The show spawned a sequel, The Bionic Woman, which was also adapted to comic form. It’s worth noting that Steve Austin’s story was originally taken from Martin Caidin’s “Cyborg” tales published by Arbor House.
