Silent Screamers: Nosferatu

In 1922, a German movie production company filmed a version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Since they neglected to secure the rights to the story, some superficial changes were made (along with the title), in an attempt to avoid any legal problems. As the first vampire movie, “Nosferatu” secured a place in film history.

In 2000 Aztech Toyz produced a series of collectable figures called Silent Screamers based on silent horror movies. This adaptation of the silent movie classic from Image Comics is in essence a promotional publication for the toy line. A full-color framing sequence surrounds the adaptation in which a maniacal jack-in-the-box called Asylum Jack captures an obnoxious spoiled delinquent intent on stealing a Silent Screamers figure from a toy store. The story switches to a subdued sepia tone art style as Asylum Jack tells his reluctant but unrepentant captive the story of the first vampire. The framing story contains a resolution of its own that is entirely appropriate.
