Lackluster World
(Generation Eric, 2004)
™ and © 2004 Eric Adams & Generation Eric Publishing LLC
Many younger small-press creators nowadays transfer their own angst into their work, but Adams is one of the few to make it original. And entertaining. Rather than engage in a mere 28-page whinefest about things like religious conversion, self-worth, and day-job drudgery, Eric Adams poetically narrates the life of albino Fahrenheit Monahan, the book’s protagonist and ironically most colorful character. Monahan is a young journalist who has little tolerance for any of his social settings, from his disdain of his one-dimensional co-workers to his hatred of society’s tendency toward blandness and conformity.
Through his vivid descriptions of the world through Fahrenheit’s ultra-cynical view, Adams creates a specific identity for both his characters and his comic book. The other characters seem to behave with creepy robotic precision, as though they have a mandate to make Fahrenheit’s life miserable. And, when they succeed in pushing him over the edge, things get disturbingly darker.
Like Stray Bullets or Strangers in Paradise, this book has an incredibly fresh approach that’s enough to make it become the next big independent-comics success story.
