Scurvy Dogs

While the media continue to try to sugarcoat their image, you can’t hide the fact that pirates make for poor role models. That’s what makes this comic book such a treat: Instead of being turned into “heroes,” the leads are never anything less than their traditional dirty, vile, homicidal selves. That makes them that much more hilarious when they make contact with anyone from “the real world.”

The two stories here may be simply told and have nonexistent backgrounds, but the well-rendered characters are slightly reminiscent of the work of Alex Campbell, and the story—Well, they used to say that nothing was like Herbie, but the second story where the pirate crew get day jobs, that’s a little like Herbie—which is high praise, indeed.

This is a comic book that dares to claim pirates have usurped the monkey’s place in the hierarchy of comedy, and, while it’s a little too early in the game to make a final ruling, Scurvy Dogs makes a strong argument for their case.
