Springing from the pages of Marvel’s adaptation of 2001, Machine Man was originally known by his experiment number: X-51. The brainchild of Dr. Abel Stack, Machine Man was the first and only success of an experiment to create robotic life. In all ways that matter, X-51 had become a living, sentient creature

Dr. Stack raised X-51 as if he were his own son. When he was given the order to terminate the experiment, Stack sacrificed his own life to save the life of X-51. This left Machine Man on his own with nowhere to turn. He found refuge with Peter Spaulding and Gears Garvin, and even fell in love with the robotic Avenger known as Jocasta. That affair ended sadly when Jocasta was killed in Marvel Two-in-One #93.
