The Small Press Expos sprung up in the early 1990s to provide a forum for independent comic creators, away from the multimedia overkill of large conventions. These special collections, benefiting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, were huge anthologies crammed with short pieces by dozens of small press creators. A partial roll call includes Colin Upton, Marc Hempel (Tug & Buster), Mark Wheatley (Radical Dreamer), Donna Barr (The Desert Peach), and many, many more. They’re very worthwhile samplers of new talent in the field, giving readers a quick way to try out work from the different creators.
