Jonni, the daughter policeman Jim Thunder, runs a hole-in-the-wall detective agency in Los Angeles. Shortly after her father’s death, she returned to her office looking to meet a new client. What she found instead was a corpse.
Jonni discovered that somebody was willing to kill to get hold of a certain statuette her father had given her fifteen years ago—a relic which, not realizing its importance, she had converted into a desk lamp. An old associate of her father’s offered her $100,000 to deliver the figure to him at an old observatory. Suspiciously, Jonni played along, only to be threatened by an assailant wielding a futuristic gun. Jonni broke and ran, dodging blasts while holding the strange relic. Suddenly, the statuette began glowing in her hand, and seconds later, a bolt of lightning struck her. Jonni found herself somehow transformed into the figure portrayed in the statuette—a super-powered avenger known as Thunderbolt.
