Concrete: Strange Armor
(Dark Horse, 1997-1998)
™ and ©1997 Paul Chadwick
Paul Chadwick’s sensitive man of stone, Concrete, appeared full-blown in the pages of Dark Horse Presents in 1986, but it wasn’t until a year later in the third and fourth issues of his own title that his origin was revealed. In a subsequent reprinting of Concrete’s origin in a book titled “A New Life,” published in 1989, Chadwick wrote that he viewed Concrete’s science-fiction-based origin as a necessary rationalization of his existence, but it was an “uncomfortable intrusion into the otherwise familiar reality I strive to portray in the series.”
Almost twelve years after the character’s first appearance, Chadwick retold the origin of his creation, subtly altering some aspects and greatly embellishing others in this five-issue mini-series. Chadwick’s talent only increased in the decade since Concrete’s genesis and the first-person narrative he employed this time made the story all the more moving.
