One Piece may be a Shonen Jump fighting manga, but it’s more Dragon Ball than Dragonball Z: an attractively drawn comedy in which slapstick is more important than the fights. It uses its many distinctive characters to good effect, making all the pluck and luck platitudes sound sincere.

Although the innocent boy captain may want to be the pirate king, he never seems to grasp what pirates actually do. He’s sure he can accomplish his goal without stealing—and only hurting the increasingly over-the-top evil pirates who cross his path.
