Hydrogen Bomb Funnies

(From the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide)

While the strips in this underground anthology title only occasionally deal with the bomb, it nonetheless contains some excellent material. Of the antiwar strips Greg Irons’ brutal “Raw War Comics” is the standout, though Fred Schrier and Foolbert Sturgeon acquit themselves with honour. Other highpoints include a beautifully drawn Dadaist piece by Robert Williams, and a typically imaginative strip by Kim Deitch. The bulk of the comic, however, is given over to Gilbert Shelton, who weighs in with a couple of Freak Brothers strips as well as the lengthy “Wonder Warthog And The Pigs From Uranus.” Contributions from Robert Crumb, S.Clay Wilson and Dave Sheridan round out a terrific package. ~DAR
