“Dial ‘H’ for Hero” was probably the ultimate wish fulfillment series of the Silver Age, one that both needs to and could easily be collected into a slim volume; it’s to be hoped that this revival will be successful enough to make that dream a reality. H-E-R-O deserves to be a success due to its considerable merits.

It’s not just a neat little concept well executed, it’s a super-hero title that actually works; paradoxically, one of the hardest things to do in a market saturated with super-heroes is to launch a completely new one.

Clearly, Pfeifer still believes in super-heroes, and that comes through with Afterburner, the first manifestation of the new H object (sadly, you’d have to explain what a “dial” was to today’s kids). Though his outfit smacks a bit (too many buckles) of post-modern anti-heroes, when it comes to attitude and action, Afterburner is Silver Age through and through. Which is part of why the final page of #1 is so entirely unexpected — it’s an ending that hasn’t happened in more than 50 years of DC comics.
