Blue Monday: Painted Moon
(Oni, 2004-2005)

Blue Monday is a New Wave comic book; not New Wave as in the French cinematic movement of the 60s, but the quirky offshoot of punk rock that originated in the late 70s and became a musical staple and even fashion statement in the 80s. Blue Monday is awash in 80s New Wave references; even its title is taken from a New Wave classic by New Order. Painted Moon—also the name of a 1987 single by the Scottish New Wave band the Silencers—continues to explore the relationships of Bleu, Clover, Alan, and Victor. Bleu is still upset after having been videotaped taking a bath by Alan and Victor. Chynna Clugston-Major’s illustrations display an obvious manga influence, but the writing and attitude has the English post-punk sensibility of the characters’ record collections.
