Strontium Dog (Mini-Series)

    (Eagle, 1985-1986)
™ and ©1985 Eagle Comics

Johnny Alpha and the rest of the Strontium Dogs originated in the British science-fiction weekly 2000 A.D. In 1985, Eagle Comics introduced them to American readers, along with other titles starring Judge Dredd, Nemesis the Warlock, and other 2000 A.D. favorites.

This four-issue mini-series began by reprinting the “Portrait of a Mutant” story line from 2000 A.D. #200–203. In it, we learn the origin of the feared mutant bounty hunter Johnny Alpha. Alpha’s mother had decided to travel across the strontium wastes left by the nuclear wars of 2150 in order to be with her husband when little Johnny was born. When her shielded transport was hijacked by bandits, she was forced to complete the journey on foot, resulting in massive radiation exposure. She gave birth to a baby with glowing eyes that could see through walls. Ironically, her husband (and Johnny’s father) was the infamous mutant-hating politician Nelson B. Kreelman.
