No Dead Time

    (Oni, 2004)
™ and © Brian McLachlan

Seth and Nozomi are both 20–somethings who are full of attitude and contemptuous of just about everybody in their respective workplaces. Seth not so cheerfully deals with the same morons every day in his job as a computer tech, while Nozomi tolerates an ever–changing assortment of characters who wander into her music store. So why is a book about two such annoying protagonists so charming? Probably because we’re all Seths or Nozomis to some degree. Probably because all of us working stiffs deal with aggravating people, but Seth and Nozomi have the courage to say what they think. And probably because these two, as in any romantic comedy, are destined to be together. Brian McLachlan’s story is clever, his dialogue biting, his characters witty. The zingers his characters toss at their foils range from punchy to hilarious. Tom Williams’ unusual portrayal of the story’s supporting cast only sharpens McLachlan’s point: Nozomi’s co-worker is characterized as a demon, complete with horns and wings, and one of Seth’s double-talking peers actually has two mouths. This wonderful book has a great story with lots of jabs as a bonus..
