At the end of his adventure in Sword of the Atom, Palmer escaped the police in South America by beaming himself through a phone line. This old trick, which he hadn’t tried in several years, went horribly awry. He literally burst through the phone at his old residence in America, but his costume vanished, and he was only able to reach the height of three feet before losing control of his power. He theorized that the new technology of microwave transmission had altered his structure as he beamed through the international communications satellite.

As bad as this was, an altered physical structure and the loss of his powers were not Palmer’s only problems. His wife had left him just as he left for South America, and currently believed him to be dead; the house he had once owned with her had been sold; and now his old “friends” at the CIA had learned that he was back in town, and were anxious to renew their acquaintance with the new Atom.
