Magneto

This special edition was given as a premium when readers bought a certain run of X-Men comics in 1994. It tells the story of Magneto, a.k.a. Erik Magnus Lehnsherr, the X-Men’s oldest foe. Erik and his family wound up in the infamous Dachau concentration camp when the Germans annexed Poland. Of his family, only Erik—taking his future wife Magda with him—would survive.

At the same time, Erik was discovering his mutant ability to control magnetism through force of will. The local villagers, frightened by his powers, prevented him from saving his daughter when an arsonist set fire to their home. In retaliation, Erik slew them. This act drove Magda to flee from Erik, and Erik began a personal crusade to lead mutants like himself away from humans’ fears—as Magneto. In truth, Magneto is less a true villain than someone whose views of how to save mutants differ from the X-Men’s Professor X.
