Power Pachyderms
(Marvel, 1989)
™ and ©1989 Marvel Entertainment Group
Their story began when a circus train lost one of its cars containing a couple of elephants. As luck would have it, the train rolled into an atomic testing ground, where (in a spoof of the Incredible Hulk’s origin), a scientist ran out trying to warn them of the impending danger. Of course, the bomb went off, the scientist was vaporized, and the elephants would give birth to super-powered babies four months later.
Thus was born the Power Pachyderms: Electralux, a martial artist; Mammoth, a powerhouse with the soul of a (very bad) poet; Trunklops, feared for his devastating nose beams; and Rumbo, whose razor-sharp retractable tusks make him a foe to be feared, and “not a good role model!” These characters, incidentally, are spoofs of Daredevil’s Elektra, and of the X-Men’s Colossus, Cyclops, and Wolverine, respectively. This one-shot comic is either a brilliant parody, or another case of Marvel getting silly.
