Super Power Blues

Yes, this is a super-hero comic, but doggoned if Morello hasn’t found a way to wring a fairly original idea out of a genre that isn’t given much credit for originality nowadays. Metro City is apparently run by a fascist governing body that many refer to as The Elite. And The Super Power is The Elite’s own chosen protector for the city. But there is another individual with super–powers who seeks to take out this so–called protector. Morello’s graphic novel is more simple and more quickly read than its 84 pages might suggest, due to his usage of large panels with minimal content. And the artistic content is attractively unusual, combining a Jim Mahfood–style simplicity with a touch of Rick Geary flair. Morello opts for the fitting noir look, with no shortage of dark backgrounds and nighttime battles. One puzzling oddity, though, is his continued usage of strange, bubble–like circles that do nothing more than make every character seem as if he or she is suffering from indigestion. Most creators in the small–press market don’t have much new to say about super–heroes, but Morello’s book is a refreshing exception.
