Tick-Tock Follies

    (Slave Labor, 1996)
™ and ©1996 Chris Hogg & Chris Butler

Points for originality here, as this one-shot from Slave Labor Graphics follows a troupe of touring showgirls from town to town across the country. The dancers perform their routines, fight off male admirers, and kill time in bars and restaurants, banally talking about men and other interests. They further amuse themselves by lounging about hotels, casually tormenting their miniature props man, Mico. Meanwhile one dancer, the lovely blonde Patricia, avoids the others during downtime, and appears to be the mute Mico’s only friend. Wistfully searching for romance, friendship, and perhaps even more, she gives the book its emotional center, and its heart.

This lovely to look at black-and-white story by writer Chris Butler and artist Chris Hogg is by turns sweet, occasionally dark, and always offbeat.
