Although the name has changed (from “Jon Sable, Freelance” to simply “Sable”), the action remains the same. Mike Grell’s noble mercenary still brings a sense of James Bond-like adventure to each issue, fighting for money and justice from the jungles of Viet Nam to the human jungle of New York City. Along the way, this series handles issues like AIDS with a striking sensitivity.

Sable also has another identity: children’s book author B.B. Flemm. The secret of Sable’s double life is known only to to his editor, Eden Kendall. Although this “secret identity” rarely causes Sable much trouble, it does make for an interesting contrast with his violent persona as Sable the freelance paladin.

This second Sable series features new creative team Marv Wolfman and Bill Jaaska.
