A mixture of political and social commentaries, plus historical strips about various Anarchist actions, there’s still room for poetry, humor, and melodrama in this fine series. In the spirit of the title, the first issue of Anarchy Comics is numbered #2.

From Spain’s excellent “Blood And Sky” about anarchy during the Spanish Civil War to Melinda Gebbie’s ornate story of Estelle Dufy, and Epistolier and Volny’s “Kronstadt” (reprinted from L’Echo Des Savanes), issue #1 sets a high standard, actually matched by the following issues. It also includes work by editor Jay Kinney, Paul Mavrides, Cliff Harper and Gilbert Shelton. Issue #2 features Kinney and Mavrides’ “Kultur Dokuments,” an Archie parody/parable, “The Black Freighter,” adapted by Cliff Harper from Brecht, another terrific history lesson by Spain about Spanish Anarchist leader Durruti (he of Column fame) and more work by Gebbie and Epistolier. Issue #3 is more of the same, augmented by strips from Albo Helm, Gerd Seyfried, early Gary Panter, Sharon Rudahl, Greg Irons, and Matt Feazell. Throughout Anarchy Comics squarely addressed its theme, prompting creators to produce work of the highest quality, and the inclusion of European material strengthens an already worthwhile package. ~NF
