It’s possible that someone at some point has written something negative about Jeff Smith’s wonderful Bone series—but such events are rarities. By now, nearly 15 years after he emerged on the comics scene, Smith has won so many awards he can’t hold them all and has become famous in the comics world. His fame, however, has mostly rested within that comics universe. Now his series is drawing attention from the world at large—and that can only be good for the world at large. Thanks to Scholastic, This Little Series That Could is entertaining new generations of readers: generations young and old. It’s in lovely color (by Steve Hamaker), neither too dark nor too bright (failings of many other recent color comics), on bright white paper stock and deliciously readable despite a smaller page dimension.
In this first volume, Phone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley Bone cross the mountains into a lovely valley, where they encounter inhabitants both hostile and welcoming. There’s comedy and adventure and scary stuff including Stupid, Stupid Rat Creatures. And none of it should be missed. If you’ve never read it, buy it now; if you’ve already got a complete (55-issue) collection, buy this for yourself for the color—and another for a friend for the delight.
