Jinki: Extend
(ADV Manga, 2004-2005)
™ and © 2002 Sirou Tunasima
“This robot is … no, it’s not a robot. It’s a Jinki!” What’s the difference between a giant robot and a Jinki? About the same as between a temple and a shrine. In both cases, a major character feels insulted when a layman can’t tell them apart, but to the average guy (the reader), they’re the same.
Akao Hiiragi is a young woman, about 16, who has no memories since three years earlier: a victim of “Lost Life Phenomenon.” Suddenly, giant robots (Sorry, Jinki.) begin battling in the streets, and Akao discovers that she is a “Cognate” who can psychically control them. The secret Good Guys from South America try to recruit her. “At this moment, the Hachi Shojin are in Tokyo. They’re a fearsome group, employing androids and powered humans. Their forces aren’t quite ready, so they’re laying low for now… but they will attack.” Akao doesn’t know what’s going on but she wants to help save people. Presumably, all will become clear in later volumes, but so far this is just a generic giant robot (Sorry, Jinki.) slam-bang battle-action story.
