Carlos Santana first realized he wanted to play the guitar when he saw Javier Batiz’ band play in the town plaza in Tijuana, Mexico. He was eleven at the time, and his father was away working in San Francisco, California. One day, Carlos received a present from his father: a Gibson guitar. Music became Carlos’ passion, and he joined Javier’s band and played various clubs, as well as working in the house band at a strip club.

In time, Carlos moved the San Francisco where he went to school and worked odd jobs before forming his first band. With the help of Grateful Dead promoter Bill Graham, Santana made its big break at the Woodstock Music Festival. From there, this remarkably fluid guitarist continued to grow, spiritually as well as musically. Over a quarter of a century later, Santana is still revered as one of the legends of the rock era.
