A year after establishing a licensing agreement with DC Comics and re–releasing several classic Elfquest books, Wendy and Richard Pini added a new chapter to the saga of the elven Wolfriders with the summer 2004 release of this 94–page full–color hardback. The Searcher and the Sword follows the parallel stories of Shuna as she attempts to forge bonds of peace between the human and elven tribes, and Treestump as he tries to discover the lost secrets of metallurgy from the trolls who have abandoned their forges. While narration by the human Shuna marks a departure for the franchise as stories are usually told from the elves' perspective, the Searcher and the Sword maintains the Pini tradition of infusing the narrative with deeper meaning, in this case making a point about ending the cycle of domestic violence.
