Seems like folks just can’t get enough of the Catholic Church—turning its principles and beliefs on its ear, that is. Kevin Smith did it in his hit film Dogma. Ben Dunn does it in his Antarctic Press series of Warrior Nun comics. And now Top Cow Productions and Image Comics have thrown their respective hats into the ring with Magdalena. Unfortunately, the book provides nothing new in terms of the exploration of Church mythology. Instead, it takes popular elements from various mainstream stories and rehashes them into one, cohesive comic book.

A prominent example can be found in the “Blood Divine” story arc where our heroine Magdalena is brought before the vampire queen for infiltrating the coven circle and killing its “unholy” members. There, she discovers the true origin of the vampires—the fact that they are not evil demons, but rather kindhearted humans infected with an AIDS-like disease—and the motives behind the killer. Meanwhile, the Vatican’s defender of the faith, Cardinal Innocent, verifies the authenticity of a long forgotten ancient manuscript. With the very backbone of the Church turned upside down, the Cardinal must deal with the possible ramifications of this find and the true fate of the Magdalena as revealed in the manuscript.
