Following the success of the Ripclaw mini-series (and a one-shot special edition), Image’s Top Cow studio launched this ongoing Ripclaw series in late 1995.
As the series kicks off, Ripclaw (a.k.a. Robert Bearclaw) is living in New York, and periodically lecturing at New York University. This peaceful existence is interrupted by a call to aid the police in solving a bizarre case. Four sewer workers were lost for two weeks, and when found appeared to be little more than ghouls. Looking for all the world like dead men, all they had to say in explanation was “Direlings.” When Ripclaw investigates, he uncovers both a powerful cult and a legion of undead creatures who lurk beneath the city.
Although Ripclaw is easy to cast as a mad slasher super-hero (à la Sabretooth or Wolverine), writers David Wohl and Brian Haberlin (Witchblade) make him far more thoughtful and interesting as a character in this series.
