Fantastic Four: The Legend
(Marvel, 1996)
™ and ©1996 Marvel Characters, Inc.
How does one compress 35 years of history into a one-shot? When Fantastic Four #1 was published in 1961, it was boldly touted as “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine.” As a subject for debate, it could be credited as reinventing the super-hero genre. The world had never seen real people with real problems portrayed as super-heroes like these: Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Girl, the Human Torch and the Thing. They got frustrated because clothing stores didn’t carry their sizes, squabbled amongst themselves, and had financial difficulties yet rose above their differences to save the world from super-villains no other force would dare engage. Despite their unique abilities, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and the ever lovin’ blue-eyed Benjamin J. Grimm were ordinary people who found themselves in the most extraordinary circumstances.
