Cerebus the Aardvark is Dave Sim’s ambitious independent comic series that ran for 300 issues. Initially a satire on Conan the Barbarian (which was enormously popular when the series debuted), Cerebus has out-lasted his more melodramatic inspiration. This special stand-alone issue features Cerebus adventures drawn by guest artists, including Murphy Anderson, Terry Austin and the incomparable Will Eisner. Seeing Cerebus as a youngster being uncharacteristically impressed by an encounter with Popeye, and in a knock down drag-out fight with The Spirit make this book a lot of fun. Although essentially an out-of-continuity title, Dave Sim endeavors to inform loyal readers exactly where these special episodes belong in the aardvark’s many-storied life.
