The Last American

    (Epic, 1990-1991)
™ Alan Grant, Michael McMahon and John Wagner

The Third World War was to have no spectators. Quite possibly, it was to have no survivors either. Out of a fierce sense of national survival, Captain Ulysses S. Pilgrim was placed in cryogenic suspension, deep inside a bombproof bunker. There he slept while the landscape burned above. When the fires were gone and the radiation died down, he was the one who was meant to reestablish America.

He woke up, twenty years later, to find a world in shambles. Nothing moved, nobody lived. After the nuclear explosions there had been the radiation. After the radiation there had been years of nuclear winter. And after that, there had been nothing.

So Ulysses Pilgrim climbed out of his bunker, accompanied by a couple of robots (one of whom speaks almost entirely in T.V. advertising clichés), and went off to look for survivors in the land that was once called America.
